Former US President Jimmy Carter is just too pure for this world.
Recently, Carter made an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote his new book, Faith. While there, Colbert and Carter discussed the current political climate, including our current president, and massive international embarrassment, Donald Trump.
Colbert asked the former president if maybe America wants “kind of a jerk for president”. The 93 year old Carter cheekily responded, “Apparently, from this recent election, yes”, which brought forth laughs from the crowd.
Another question Colbert asked was if Carter, a famously spiritual man, prays for our current president. Carter responded,
“I pray that he’ll be a good president, and that he’ll keep our country at peace, and that he’ll refrain from using nuclear weapons, and that he will promote human rights. So, yeah, I pray for him.”
Carter, who has been critical of President Trump, and some of his policy decisions in the past, has, however, gone on record as saying that he hopes Trump does not get impeached, even if wrongdoing is exposed by special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation
“My own preference would be that he not be impeached, but that he be able to serve out his term, because I think he wants to do a good job…And I’m willing to help him, if I can help him, and give him the benefit of the doubt.”
Jimmy Carter is probably not the only person who prays for President Donald Trump, but it is easy to imagine that he is one of the few who, while implying Trump is a jerk, is still willing to give the man the benefit of the doubt. The entire Colbert interview can be seen here.
