Recently, Jimmy Kimmel tested President Donald Trump’s “Buy American” slogan on an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Kimmel purchased merchandise from the Trump Store, which is run by Trump’s sons, Donald Jr. and Eric. The late night host said:
“I’m sure Eric and Donald Jr. take this American thing very seriously. These guys are red, white and blue to the core. They’re like a couple of flags wearing hair gel, these two.”
But upon further review, a pattern emerged among the products Kimmel purchased from the “Trump Store”. As Kimmel read the labels from the products he bought, the pattern became clear: an overwhelming majority of the merchandise came from countries outside of the United States. The products instead were produced in countries like China, Thailand, and Peru.
Of course, this isn’t the first time that Trump has been shamed for outsourcing after he became president. This is because Trump is still able to access the assets of Trump Organization, which is unprecedented, as former presidents have created a blind trust in order to divest their business assets while in office.
Even more worrisome than the obviously outsourced goods were the goods that didn’t even label a country of origin. We can undoubtedly assume that these products were not made in the USA. Had they been, Trump with all his blustering would have insured that that information would have been prominent on these products. If the unlabeled products were indeed imports, law requires that they be labeled with their respective country of origin. Kimmel read from the US Customs website:
“Failure to properly report product origin can result in substantial penalties. Companies can face up to $500,000 in fines per violation or ‘double’ the loss or gain from the violation related to these violations.”
As is always the case with Trump, laws apply to everyone but him.
