Given the recent negative news surrounding Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg, perhaps now would be a good time to remember something positive about the social media founder and CEO.
In February of 2014, news broke that Zuckerberg and his wife had donated 18 million shares of Facebook, which were valued at $992.2 million to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation in Mountain View, California.
The foundation partners with donors to fund for profit and non-profit organizations around the globe. One of the foundation’s collaborators is Planned Parenthood. While it is unclear if any of Zuckerberg’s donation was passed along to Planned Parenthood, it is highly unlikely that a man of Zuckerberg’s standing would donate such an enormous sum without researching where that money could possibly end up.
Of course, right wing pro-lifers seized upon this news and used it in a negative way, something only Republicans can do when it comes to charitable giving. Amazing how a group of people can find fault even in altruism. When news later broke of Zuckerberg and his wife’s impending parenthood after struggles with infertility and miscarriages, right wingers doubled down on their harsh criticism of the mogul and his donation.
Unfortunately for us, Republicans couldn’t just put their money where their mouths were and boycott Facebook or social media in general. Had they done so, perhaps Zuckerberg wouldn’t have had to go to Capitol Hill and face hours of grilling from lawmakers about the website’s severe “fake news” and hate group problems. Republicans: ruining it for everyone since the beginning of time.
