According to sources close familiar with the man’s practices, President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen, regularly taped conversations with associates. Now, allies of President Trump are concerned that those recordings have fallen into the hands of the FBI, after the raid on Cohen’s home and offices this past week.
This past week, FBI agents executed a search warrant against Cohen as part of an investigation into possible illegal conduct concerning Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal, both of whom have admitted to affairs with Trump in the past. Investigators were also looking for communications between Cohen, Trump, and campaign aides, that might include “potential sources of negative publicity” during the 2016 Presidential Election. To that end, Cohen’s phones, computers, and other records were seized by the FBI.
While it is yet unknown if Cohen actually taped any conversations, sources close to Cohen have said that it was “standard practice” for him to do so. Apparently, Trump was aware of Cohen’s proclivities, as the lawyer would often play recordings of his conversations with top advisers for the president. Sources also stated that Cohen most likely taped these conversations in emulation of the president, who has often bragged about possessing tapes of private conversations, only to later admit that he doesn’t.
“Federal investigators would not automatically get access to any tapes that might have been seized in the raids. First, the recordings would be reviewed by a separate Justice Department team and possibly by a federal judge. The review is designed to protect lawyer-client privilege and to be sure that the conversations turned over are within the terms of the search warrant, legal experts said.
They noted that the privilege accorded to attorney-client communications does not apply if the conversation was conducted to further commission of a crime or fraud.”
It will be interesting to see what comes of this in the next few weeks. It is possible that Trump’s undoing will come at the hands of his close friend, and the women he has underestimated. That is poetic justice.
