Congressional Republicans have spent the entirety of Trump’s presidency either choosing to ignore his scandals and insane behaviors and policies, or playing the role of sycophant. It is definitely not surprising that most of the Republicans have been silent. Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan are supposed to be party leaders, but have not committed any actions that even slightly represent leadership. Their behavior has been viewed as suspicious by some, and may be coming back to bite them.
It has been pieced together by the media that the Trump Campaign and the Russian government held meetings at the RNC for the sole purpose of changing the Republican platform to suit foreign needs. Clearly, the party leaders knew about this and can’t even deny it, since their platform was altered after these meetings, leaving their deniability nonexistent.
GOP delegate Diana Denman is set to give testimony before Congress that a Trump Campaign adviser by the name of JD Gordon told her that Trump wanted to change the platform during the Republican National Convention in a way that would benefit Russia. Gordon quit the campaign just weeks after the convention, per NPR.
Even though these meetings haven’t garnered much attention in the media, Robert Mueller has taken them very seriously, according to Reuters. Jeff Sessions is of particular interest to Mueller. Reuters goes on to report:
“Investigators have asked detailed questions about conversations that Sessions, then a Trump campaign adviser, had at a convention event attended by then-Russian Ambassador to the United States Sergei Kislyak, said the first source, who was questioned by Mueller about the event.”
“The same source said Mueller’s team also has been asking whether Sessions had private discussions with Kislyak on the sidelines of a campaign speech Trump gave at Washington’s Mayflower Hotel in April 2016.”
We have learned that Robert Mueller already has all the answers he needs by the time the media reports on what he is doing. It stands to reason that if there is a witness who can confirm that McConnell and Ryan knew about these meetings, Mueller will find that person and nail them to the wall.
