In one of the most embarrassing moments of Alabama Republican Senate contender Roy Moore’s entire campaign, his wife got on stage at a rally and attempted to paint her husband as an Advocate For All. Mrs. Moore said her husband “first took office as chief justice many years ago — he brought with him three people…” She added that “ two were Black” and one of them — wait for it — was in the audience! What a surprise! How unlike an accused racist Republican to have ONE Black person in any given audience as refutation that they aren’t racist. And, of course, Mrs. Moore did point in the general direction of… presumably a Black man. She then paused for applause.
Kayla Moore then rambled that “fake news” was also reporting that her family does not “care for Jews,” but refuted that by asserting that “…one of our attorneys… is a Jew.” This was followed by a slightly psychotic smile and nod, as though she knew the room would light up in uproarious laughter. The room complied. Sadly.
Who knows what prompted anyone to have written that line into Mrs. Moore’s speech, but Roy Moore was catching fire for having said on the record that George Soros is “going to the same place that people who don’t recognize God and morality and accept his salvation are going.” Of course any claims of racism or Antisemitism were dwarf by the avalanche of appalling accusations of sexual misconduct, so one can only wonder why this particular bit of character testimony by Moore’s wife was even deemed necessary.
But the Birmingham-based attorney, Richard Jaffe, who was hired by the Moores in 2016 to defend their son against drug charges isn’t playing along. He insists he never supported Roy Moore’s political ambitions. Jaffe told The Washington Examiner:
“There could not be a more passionate supporter of Doug than me!”
Mr. Jaffe also added that he planned to attend the swearing-in ceremony for Doug Jones.
While Roy Moore deserves to go the same place that sexual predators go — hopefully a uniquely torturous circle of Hell — I am grateful for the laughs. The lawyer he reduced to a token has now joyfully declared that he was never a fan. On a personal level, one of my friends custom ordered and expedited shipping for dozens of “One Of Our Lawyers Is A Jew!” bumper stickers as Hanukkah gifts for her family.
Also, thanks to Roy Moore for finally tearing the respectability cloth off the scourge that has become the “Christian Conservative” movement. It’s going to take them ages to re-package their hate and hypocrisy.
