According to statements from former Vice President Joe Biden, Mitch McConnell may be to blame for the extent of Russia’s interference with the 2016 Presidential Election.
Per Biden, McConnell blocked any attempts at a bi-partisan warning to the Russians in reference to their actions towards the United States. Biden believes this was done as a partisan political tactic.
Biden made these statements about McConnell during an interview at the Council on Foreign Relations about an article he had recently written about Russia. Biden also said that he and former President Barack Obama both felt that it was best not to speak out about Russian interference in the 2016 Presidential Election.
The thinking behind that decision was that if they spoke out, it would appear as though they were saying the election was illegitimate. According to Biden:
“Can you imagine if the president called a press conference in October, with this fella, Bannon, and company, and said, ‘Tell you what: Russians are trying to interfere in our elections and we have to do something about it,’ ” he said. “Would things have gotten better, or would it further look like we were trying to de-legitimize the electoral process, because of our opponent? Had we known what we knew three weeks later, we may have done something more.”
When asked earlier this year if he felt that Russia had interfered with the 2016 Presidential Election, Biden responded that he didn’t “think”, he “knew” the Russians had interfered. It is hard to say if Biden’s statements will play into the ongoing investigation of Team Trump.
But, as more evidence is discovered that supports the claim that Russia interfered with the election, it also seems to show that Team Trump was right in the middle of the mess. Biden has exactly timing.
