As special counsel Robert Mueller gets closer and closer to handing out more charges and indictments, President Donald Trump’s legal team keeps telling the president that the investigation will be over soon and that Trump himself will be exonerated. In other words, Trump’s legal team is feeding him a line of bull, but the question is why?
Bill Palmer pointed out, “In fairness to the attorney, Trump is so screwed that it’s not clear that any attempted legal strategy would get anywhere. And Trump, being a narcissist, would instinctively rather have an attorney who tells him he’s winning, than an attorney who tells him he’s losing and wants to discuss how to minimize the inevitable bad ending.”
Trump’s attorneys aren’t even trying to defend the president at this point. Meanwhile, Mueller is closing in and Trump’s future hangs in the balance. Obviously, Trump’s legal team knows this, but can’t or won’t make Trump understand his peril.
According to sources who hear conversations which involve the president, Trump is boastful to his friends and advisers that he will be cleared of any wrongdoing in the coming weeks. Trump is so convinced that he’ll be exonerated, that he’s telling those close to him that Mueller will be writing a letter clearing him, which will allow him to escape the scandal that has clouded his entire presidency thus far.
Unfortunately for Trump, Mueller’s investigation isn’t close to being over and could last up to another year. The Washington Post points out:
“People with knowledge of the investigation said it could last at least another year — pointing to ongoing cooperation from witnesses such as former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos and former national security adviser Michael Flynn, as well as a possible trial of two former Trump campaign officials. The special counsel’s office has continued to request new documents related to the campaign, and members of Mueller’s team have told others they expect to be working through much of 2018, at a minimum.”
Sources are worried that Trump will have one of his infamous meltdowns when he isn’t exonerated soon, with one source saying, “He’ll try and fire Mueller and then be impeached”. This same source claims that Trump’s legal team is simply trying to “manage Trump. That’s what everyone tries to do.”
Another longtime friend of Trump claims that Trump’s lawyers have “lulled him into a false sense of security”, in the process creating a recipe for disaster. The friend continued, saying, “I’ve known him long enough to know that disappointing him is a problem and they’ve built up a level of expectations for him that are unrealistic”.
With news that the investigation could last another year, Trump’s handlers are doubtlessly trying to keep the president from unleashing a disastrous tweet storm
