Not long ago, former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe was arbitrarily fired by President Donald Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The firing came after 21 years of service, and one day before McCabe would have vested his retirement.
McCabe’s two decade career was largely unmarred by scandal. Yet Sessions said that McCabe was fired because he was not forthcoming with investigators. Sessions also accused McCabe of leaking information to the press. President Trump also claimed, without a shred of evidence, that McCabe was an ally of Hillary Clinton. Trump based his accusations only on the fact that Jill McCabe, Andrew’s wife, received donations from Mrs. Clinton during her failed run for state office in Virginia. McCabe has denied the claims of both Sessions and Trump, saying that he was a target of the two because of the possibility that he will be a crucial witness in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, and because Trump has waged war on the FBI.
Now, McCabe is “facing inquiries by Congress, an investigation by the Justice Department Inspector General, and other potential lawsuits”. In order to raise money for his defense in these cases, the former deputy director set up a Go Fund Me. The original goal of $250,000 was surpassed in one day, reaching $457,000. The fundraising page includes a statement from McCabe which reads:
“The outpouring of support on GoFundMe has been simply overwhelming and has led to contributions that have left us stunned and extraordinarily grateful. The GoFundMe campaign began organically, with generous people spontaneously giving to accounts that others had set up. I never imagined that I would need to rely on this type of assistance. The fact is that if I am going to continue taking a stand against the unfair way I have been treated, I will need the help of a talented and courageous team behind me. Hopefully our efforts, fueled by your incredible support, will encourage others to stand up for themselves, and the truth, as well. It is not lost on me that each contribution reflects not just someone’s well wishes, but also their acknowledgement that something in this situation is not fair or just. We wish to thank every donor from the bottom of our hearts for your support.”
“Mr. McCabe and his team are working to gain clarity around the lasting impact his firing – 26 hours before his planned retirement – will have on the pension and healthcare benefits he earned over his two decades of service to the FBI. However, no funds raised for the Andrew McCabe Legal Defense Fund will be used for anything beyond his defense of the allegations against him. He will continue to fight for the pension and benefits he deserves, rather than accept any crowdfunding for that purpose. Following the conclusion of any related legal proceedings, any funds that remain in the Legal Defense Fund will be donated to charitable organizations of the McCabes’ choosing.”
The fundraiser is now closed, after 13,271 people donated a total of $554,470.
