In what may be one of the most glaring examples of his lack of empathy and understanding, President Trump recently said that US farmers won’t mind taking a hit due to trade disputes with China. Trump actually, literally said,
“…if we do a deal with China, if, during the course of a negotiation they want to hit the farmers because they think that hits me, I wouldn’t say that’s nice. But I tell you, our farmers are great patriots… These are great patriots. They understand that they’re doing this for the country… And we’ll make it up to them. And in the end, they’re going to be much stronger than they are right now.”
Trump went on to claim that because of his work on NAFTA, “farmers will be better off than they ever were.”
The Farm Bureau has opposed the tariffs and stands in support of free trade. A spokesperson for the Farm Bureau said, “It’s our hope and expectation that both sides will eventually arrive at an agreement that does not include tariffs… Whatever happens, you can be certain our policy will support the interests of farmers nationwide.”
Of course, Trump has ignored this, and continued to look into more and more tariffs to impose upon China.
In retaliation, China has proposed $50 billion in tariffs on US goods, including soy beans. Because China is a major market for soy beans, farmers are fearful that Trump’s trade war could severely impact their livelihoods. Given Trump’s assurances that farmers won’t mind taking one for the team, the president couldn’t care less about the lives of American farmers. Of course, he really couldn’t care less about the lives of Americans in general, so this shouldn’t be surprising.
